2024-25 Budget Appeal Form

Jump to main content

The financial aid budget is comprised of standard educational expenses incurred by students such as tuition, fees, housing, books, etc. Columbia Business School uses average amounts for all non-tuition and fee budget items based on University-wide estimates. The budget reflects a moderate student lifestyle. We strongly encourage students to plan and budget their expenses and aid so that they stay within the financial aid budget set by the school.

We understand that in certain situations the financial aid budget does not accurately reflect the costs a student will incur during the academic year. In such cases, a student may appeal to have the budget increased within the guidelines below. Please carefully read the information regarding acceptable items for a budget appeal.

Forms will only be accepted up to 2 weeks prior to the end of the term.

Budget appeals will be considered for the following items:

  • Rent in excess of budgeted cost ($1,900/month)
  • Childcare expenses (maximum increase of $1637/month per child)
  • Computer purchase in excess of budgeted cost ($1,250) up to $2,000 (first year, one-time increase only)
  • Non-elective medical, dental, vision, or disability expenses not covered by insurance
  • Additional course related expenses (ex. Global Immersion Program fees and plane tickets)

Budget appeals will NOT be considered for the following items:

  • Expenses that occur outside of the academic year
  • Club/cluster dues
  • Credit card payments
  • Prior educational or private loan repayment
  • Discretionary medical or dental procedures
  • Student conferences
  • Purchase/maintenance of a car
