The Gilded Age was the name given to the period following the Civil War until the turn of the new century, a time in American history when there was massive economic growth and exorbitant materialism. This HBO Max TV show takes place in 1882, in the heart of affluent New York. The show follows two neighboring families that face opposing hurdles: The Brook-Van Rhijns, who are considered "old money" but who struggle to maintain their lifestyle, and the Russells, who have a plethora of "new money" but find it difficult to be accepted in high society.
