Celebrated for its exceptional finance division, Columbia Business School is also known for its orientation toward the Graham and Dodd approach to investing. This renowned methodology, detailed in the classic 1934 text Security Analysis, was developed at the School by the authors, Columbia faculty members Benjamin Graham and David Dodd. In recent years, Columbia Business School has expanded its Graham and Dodd program. Under the leadership of Bruce Greenwald, the Heilbrunn Professor of Finance & Asset Management, the Heilbrunn Center for Graham & Dodd Investing has assembled a full suite of courses. The program is designed to educate a core group of dedicated Columbia MBAs every year in value investing. To become the top investment analysts in the world, students must gain the perspectives of both full-time faculty members and adjunct professors. Columbia MBA students are taught by the leading scholars in the field as well as professional investment managers who practice the art of investing every day. The result is a classroom experience that yields both in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience. “We want to teach students financial management principles that apply to the real world,” says Professor Greenwald. “We want to use real-world practitioners who have a demonstrable success rate over a period of time.” The cornerstone of Columbia Business School’s program in the Graham and Dodd approach is the Applied Value Investing course. Students learn from practitioners how to search for, evaluate and present investment ideas. Sections are kept small—only 15 to 17 students each—to encourage discussion and allow for individual attention and feedback. Admission to the course is by application only, and applicants must demonstrate a desire to pursue a career in investing as well as an interest in the Graham and Dodd approach. After gaining admission to the Applied Value Investing course, students are encouraged to take the following courses to round out their field of study in investment management: Value and Special Situation Investing, Security Analysis, the Seminar in Value Investing, Economics of Strategic Behavior and the Seminar in Advanced Investment Research. These courses address specific topics in investment analysis and offer an impressive roster of guest speakers.
