In this episode of Columbia Bizcast, Professor Gernot Wagner, an expert in climate economics, explores the complex challenges posed by the climate crisis while highlighting the immense opportunities it presents for businesses.

Recorded during Reunion 2024, Wagner’s talk emphasizes that while the environmental risks are daunting, the solutions offer a significant opportunity for economic growth.

In his words, the reality around climate change is bad. What we don’t know is worse. Yet there are massive opportunities for environmental protection paired with economic prosperity.

He emphasizes the trillions of dollars of potential waiting to be tapped, the importance of avoiding greenwashing, and the need for businesses to inspire continued action both within their operations and among their consumers. Wagner also notes that the economics of climate change have reached a positive tipping point—one that even the results of the 2024 U.S. elections cannot reverse.

This episode serves as a roadmap to harness the potential within the climate crisis, offering insights on how to foster a resilient and thriving economy.
