At the panel "CEO’s Corner: Long-Term Perspectives," industry leaders discussed the branding implications of the term "REIT," their challenges in the industry, and the emergence of e-commerce as a competitor.

Professor Lynne B. Sagalyn and Michael Berman '86 opened the sixth annual Columbia Business School Real Estate Symposium. Berman introduced Sam Zell as a pioneer in the REIT industry. The opening remarks were followed by a lively fireside chat between Zell and Sagalyn.

MBA students Sophie Ulrike Dorrer ’14, Jacob Feingold ’14, and Matthew Nunn ’14 won first place, the Alexander Bodini Foundation Prize, at the Real Estate Project Class Final Presentations Competition and Awards Dinner at Columbia Business School on December 10. 

Michael Giliberto oversaw U.S. portfolio management and global investment strategy and research within the Global Real Assets Group at JPMorgan Asset Management and now consults, produces the Giliberto-Levy Commercial Mortgage Performance Index, and is a director of Empire State Realty Trust and of the Hunt Companies. He also teaches Real Estate Portfolio Management. In a recent interview with Jovaun Boyd ’14, he discussed the evolution of institutional investing in real estate, lessons on investing, and his teaching.

Organized in conjunction with the MIT Center for Real Estate, the event gave more than 60 graduate students from Columbia, MIT, and Harvard a chance to learn about joint ventures.

One of America’s leading markets was the destination for the Columbia Business School Real Estate Association’s fall domestic “trek” on November 3-5.

The conference “State Intervention and Private Enterprise: Japan, the U.S., and China” addressed state intervention in private enterprise, comparing recent and historical trends in the United States, China, and Japan. Speakers and discussants including Paul Milstein Professor of Real Estate Christopher J. Mayer addressed a broad range of topics relevant to the subject of intervention, including real estate finance.

Alicia Glen, managing director at Goldman, Sachs & Co., heads the firm’s Urban Investment Group (UIG), which provides capital to underserved domestic urban markets. Also an adjunct professor in the Finance and Economics Department, she teaches Social Impact Real Estate Investing and Development, offered for the first time in fall 2012. In a recent interview with Annie Koo ’14, Glen discussed how to connect the dots between the public and private sectors as well as her career path and teaching.

Professor Lynne B. Sagalyn traveled to Sydney in May to advise the Australian School of Business at the University of New South Wales on establishing a real estate program. During her visit as the Andrew Roberts Visiting Professor, Sagalyn conducted a research seminar, met with academics and industry professionals, and participated in an industry panel discussion on commercial real estate market trends.

Tomasz Piskorski, Edward S. Gordon Associate Professor of Real Estate at Columbia Business School, has been named a co-recipient of the 2013 AQR Insight Award for his research on how to identify and quantify misreported loans in the $2 trillion market for private mortgage-backed securities.
