Daniel Mintzer ’13, Morris Cox ’13, Donnel Baird ’13, and Yaniv Kalish ’12 reached second place at the annual Ross Renewable Energy Case Competition, organized by the University of Michigan Ross School of Business.
The competition is one of the preeminent national competitions focusing on the renewable energy industry. Judges at this year’s competition included representatives from industry leaders such as GE Energy, Duke Energy, Uni-Solar, and Exelon. Teams were judged on their case analysis as well as oral defense and presentation.
The project was to advise DTE Energy, Detroit, and the surrounding region's utility about the best way to approach whether or not to adopt a 20 percent renewable energy portfolio. Student teams were asked to figure out the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), for natural gas, photovoltaic, solar thermal, coal, and nuclear energies, and then made recommendations about the best mix of fuels, challenges in implementation, governement policy, and the best way to overcome challenges. Students presented their cases to senior executives from a range of energy companies.
