The Finance and Economics Division is pleased to announce the promotion of Wei Jiang to tenure, effective July 1.
Wei joined us as an assistant professor in 2001 and was named the Sidney Taurel Associate Professor of Business in 2006. Prior to joining the Columbia Business School faculty in 2001, Wei spent two years as a lecturer in microeconomics and investments at Fudan University, where she earned the Faculty Teaching Award. She also served on the faculty of the University of Chicago in the Department of Economics from 1998 to 2000 and in the Department of Mathematics from 2000 to 2001. Wei's professional background includes terms spent as an investment banking associate in the Shanghai office of Prudential Securities and as a consultant for Prudential's international division based in New York. Wei received a BA in economics in 1989 with the honor "Best Graduate of the Year" (equivalent to summa cum laude) and an MA in international economics in 1992 from Fudan University. Subsequently, she earned an MA and her PhD in economics at the University of Chicago in 1997 and 2001, respectively.
Wei's research interests include incentives for portfolio managers with endogenous risk choices, analysts' forecasting behavior, and econometric methods to measure market timing by money managers. She is particularly interested in incentive-related corporate finance issues. Wei's recent studies have primarily focused on the various governance issues of investment companies. Two successful papers resulted from this work, representing the first such published research on the respective topics, and both using unique, hand-collected data sets. Wei's work has been received by prominent journals and newspapers such as the Journal of Finance, Money Management Executive, The Wall Street Journal, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Reuters, New York Times, Money Magazine, Fortune, and Institutional Investor.
Wei actively contributes to the Finance and Economics division and the School at large. She teaches the core MBA course Corporate Finance, which is taken by approximately 80 percent of Columbia Business School students, and also frequently teaches outside the MBA curriculum. During her time at the School, Wei has been awarded the Chazen Fellowship in 2002 and 2004 and the Eugene M. Lang Fellowship in 2004.
