Professor Hugh Patrick, Director of the Center on Japanese Economy and Business and Charles Wolf Jr., senior economic adviser and corporate fellow in international economics of the RAND Corporation, are responsible each year for selecting faculty from Columbia and other top-tier academic institutions to participate in this one-week program in Japan organized and financed by the Keizai Koho Center (KKC), an arm of Nippon Keidanren. KKC arranges a week of meetings and visits in Japan with corporate executives, scholars, government officials, and politicians, with the intent of promoting understanding of the Japanese economy, corporations, and management methods.The group was in Tokyo from June 2–6, 2008. The participant from Columbia Business School was Tim Baldenius, professor of accounting. Other participants in addition to Charles Wolf included Charla Griffy-Brown, associate professor of information systems, Pepperdine Graduate School of Business; Charles O’Reilly, professor of management, Stanford Graduate School of Business; and Richard Rumelt, professor of business and society, UCLA Anderson School of Management. On June 6, the five program members were the speakers at the “Changes in the Global Economic Environment and for Corporate Management” symposium held at the Nippon Keidanren.
