Shang-Jin Wei, the N.T. Wang Professor of Chinese Business and Economy, has been named as director of the Jerome A. Chazen Institute of International Business at Columbia Business School. Wei’s areas of expertise include international finance, trade and the Chinese economy. His insights into the global economy will propel the Chazen Institute to further expand its research and offerings in the global marketplace.“When we talk about global imbalances and solutions for the world’s economy and financial crisis,” Wei said, “my hope is that people will look naturally to the Chazen Institute to be a key source for ideas.”Dean Glenn Hubbard lauded Wei’s appointment as director. “The Chazen Institute has quickly become a force in international business development and Shang-Jin’s expertise in issues of globalization, his impressive and influential research and his record of success throughout his career make him the ideal person to take on leadership of the institute,” said Dean Hubbard. “I am confident that he will ably lead the institute to continued preeminence among scholars and practitioners alike.” Wei joined Columbia Business School as a faculty member in 2007. Before coming to the School, he held a variety of positions at the International Monetary Fund, including assistant director, chief of the Trade and Investment Division and chief of mission to Myanmar (Burma). He has served as the New Century Chair Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and as an associate professor at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. Wei has undertaken consulting work for both private companies such as PricewaterhouseCoopers and government organizations, including the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the United Nations. In addition to his current role at the Business School, Wei teaches finance and economics at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. He is also director of the Working Group on the Chinese Economy and research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, and a research fellow at the Center for Economic Policy Research in Europe. Wei holds a PhD in economics and an MS in finance from the University of California, Berkeley.The Jerome A. Chazen Institute of International Business offers programs for students and faculty members to develop international perspectives in business practice and policy. It was founded in 1991 by Jerome A. Chazen ’50 to serve as a link between the Business School and a global community of scholars and executives.
