Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh

Research: Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh's research interests lie at the intersection of real estate, macro-economics, and asset pricing. He has studied the role of relaxation of credit standards for U.S. house prices, how to design a better mortgage finance system in the U.S., the role of the Government-Sponsored Enterprizes and of macro-prudential policy for financial sector fragility, cross-sectional differences in house prices across U.S. metro areas, and the role of foreign investors in the housing markets of gateway cities. He is currently working on the effectiveness of various housing affordability policies and on the interplay of different types of institutional investors in the commercial real estate ecosystem.

Ph.D.: Stijn received his Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University. On Being at Columbia: “I am excited to bring my talents to Columbia GSB. It is a terrific institution located in the heart of the most exciting real estate market in the world. The finance department has a deep bench of young and established talent. I look forward to contributing to its continued growth and excellence in the areas of finance, real estate, and macroeconomics.”

Fun Fact: As a native of Belgium, cycling is in Stijn's blood. He looks forward to long bike rides in Riverside and Central Park. Stijn may also well be the best court tennis player from Belgium (but also the only one).

Laura Veldkamp

Research: Laura Veldkamp’s research focuses on how individuals, investors, and firms get their information, how that information affects the decisions they make, and how those decisions affect the macroeconomy and asset prices. Her recent work examines how people form beliefs about tail risk and how learning about tails, or disasters, can explain persistent low-interest rates, volatile equity prices, and secular stagnation.

Ph.D.: Laura received her Ph.D. in Economic Analysis and Policy from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. On Being at Columbia: “I'm excited about embarking on a new adventure uptown.” Fun Fact: Laura enjoys playing squash, sculling (rowing), and playing the viola.

Yiming Ma

Research: Yiming Ma's research lies at the intersection of financial intermediation, industrial organization, and monetary policy. She is particularly interested in how the interaction between financial institutions affects financial stability and the pass-through of monetary policy. To better address these questions, Yiming is collaborating with a number of policy institutions such as the European Central Bank and the German Bundesbank.

Ph.D.: Yiming received her Ph.D. in Finance from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. On Being at Columbia: “The amount of passion and energy at Columbia Business School is unparalleled. It is such an honor to become part of this community and I look forward to interacting with and learning from my colleagues in many years to come.”

Fun Fact: Yiming was born in China, raised in Germany and attended middle and high school in Hong Kong before coming to the U.S. for college.
