E. Tory Higgins, professor of management at the Business School and the Stanley Schachter Professor of Psychology in the School of Arts and Sciences, received the Presidential Teaching Award from Columbia University President Lee Bollinger at commencement on May 19, 2004. Conferred annually on five University faculty members, the award recognizes professors who, through their outstanding teaching, have influenced their students’ development and enhanced the tradition of educational excellence at Columbia.

Higgins taught an EMBA course on negotiation this spring and will teach a PhD course on social responsibility in 2005. He is director of the Motivation Sciences Center at the University and has received numerous awards for his work in social psychology, including the William James Fellow Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions in 2000. He earned a PhD from Columbia in 1973.

Higgins is the third Business School faculty member to receive the University’s teaching award in the past five years. Previous honorees are Bruce Greenwald, the Robert Heilbrunn Professor of Finance and Asset Management and director of the Heilbrunn Center for Graham and Dodd Investing, and John Donaldson, the Mario J. Gabelli Professor of Finance and academic director of the doctoral program.
