To the Columbia Business School community, Greetings from Marilynn Joyner and Barry Wise, Co-Chairs of the EMBA Student Leadership and Ethics Board (SLEB)! As EMBA students, we come to CBS with a wealth of experience and knowledge, including first-hand accounts of complex professional issues and ethical dilemmas in the workplace. We utilize these experiences to bring to life open and honest conversations on business leadership in the 21st century.   Through our partnership with The Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Center for Leadership and Ethics, we help advance The Center’s mission in raising the ethical standards of business education and leadership, while encouraging students to think more critically about ethical issues occurring in society today. So far this year, in pursuit of these goals, we have introduced programming to highlight ethics at work. Some recent discussion topics have included the implementation of diversity requirements on corporate boards, exploring the landscape of student loans amongst employees, and examining the impact of artificial intelligence within investment management. We plan to extend our efforts by fostering a greater discussion around the ethical implications unearthed during the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement to examine how business leaders may find opportunities to enact positive change. In addition to our emphasis on ethical leaderships, we seek to formulate discussions on and raise awareness around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) practices in the workplace. We plan to further integrate DEI into our programming and curriculum review to ensure that we, as leaders, are fully prepared to engage with these issues in the current business environment. To establish continual growth in our understanding and reach, we promise to bring in more diverse leaders from a variety of industries. We believe this will encourage more unique and creative perspectives and will allow all of us to expand our networks and relationships with business leaders from different backgrounds and experiences.  We are excited for the upcoming year and look forward to working diligently to enact positive change that will impact Columbia Business School’s future leaders.
