NEW YORK – Columbia Business School welcomes Goldman Sachs Senior Investment Strategist Abby Joseph Cohen as a Professor of Business. Previously an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School for eight years, Cohen will now bring her skills in economic analysis and investment expertise to the School’s new Manhattanville campus, beginning with the Future of the Global Economy course in January. Cohen’s appointment builds on Columbia Business School’s long history of bridging academic theory and industry practice and developing course content that mirrors today’s rapidly changing business environment.

"It’s a privilege to welcome Abby Joseph Cohen to the Columbia Business School faculty. Throughout her career at Goldman Sachs, she developed an unrivaled knowledge of institutional investment and will bring keen insights on global economics and the financial industry into the classroom," said Dean Costis Maglaras, the David and Lyn Silfen Professor of Business. "Columbia Business School has the unique privilege to be able to draw on incredibly accomplished business leaders that can connect with students in and out of our classrooms and with our faculty in their thought leadership. With decades of experience at one of the world’s premier investment firms, Professor Cohen will bring a unique and nuanced view of the markets to the School."

Cohen has been teaching the Future of the Global Economy course at Columbia Business School since 2014. This is a highly popular and oversubscribed MBA course co-taught with Professor Pierre Yared, the MUTB Professor of International Business and Vice-Dean for Executive Education. Prior to Columbia Business School, Cohen was a longstanding partner who held multiple leadership roles at Goldman Sachs, most recently as an Advisory Director and Senior Investment Strategist. Cohen was previously the firm’s chief US investment strategist during which time she was regularly cited as one of the most influential individuals on Wall Street. She also spent six years as President of the firm’s Global Markets Institute, focusing her work on the intersection of economics, financial markets, and government policy. She led a variety of research projects and firmwide initiatives across areas such as environment, social, and governance (ESG) issues, immigration, labor, capital formation, and innovation.

"Columbia Business School provides an impressive mix of high-quality education, world-renowned faculty, and passionate students preparing to lead the next generation of business," said Abby Joseph Cohen. "I’m honored to have the opportunity to bring the finance and economics principles that have guided me in my career to Columbia Business School. This role is a natural next step for me, and I’m excited to spend more time in the classroom teaching and mentoring the leaders of the future."

"It’s rare to be able to recruit someone of Abby’s caliber to our faculty," said Pierre Yared. "She has been on the front lines of every major macroeconomic event of the past thirty years and has a breadth of knowledge and practical experience that shines in the classroom. Thanks to our location in New York City, we have been fortunate to work with her in the past, and we are looking forward to many more teaching and research collaborations in the future."

Cohen currently serves on the board executive committees of the Brookings Institution and the Jewish Theological Seminary, and is a Presidential Councillor at Cornell University where she chairs the steering committee of the Jacobs Innovation Center at Cornell Tech and is a Life Fellow of Weill Cornell Medicine. She was previously board chair of the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute and Vice Chair of the Economic Club of New York. Cohen is a native New Yorker, who has earned degrees in economics, has three honorary doctorates, and was awarded the Barnard Medal. Among others, her career has been the subject of a Harvard Business School case study, a BusinessWeek cover story, and a profile in the New Yorker, including a cartoon.
