Barbara Krumsiek, chair, president, and CEO of Calvert Investments, has been awarded Columbia Business School’s 2012 Botwinick Prize in Business Ethics. The award was presented during a ceremony on Monday, November 26. The Botwinick Prize is an annual award recognizing an outstanding leader who exhibits the highest standard of ethical conduct in business or the professions. It is organized by the Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Center for Leadership and Ethics, the umbrella for leadership and ethics activities at the School.

Krumsiek was awarded the Botwinick Prize for her work at Calvert Investments, which is a globally recognized leader in the field of sustainable and responsible investing. During the ceremony, Krumsiek shared insights from her career, which spans more than three decades in investment management, and discussed Calvert’s innovative strategies that link sustainability with financial performance.

"The School is proud to recognize Ms. Krumsiek as an exemplary leader who has been committed to encouraging sustainable and responsible investing at Calvert," said Dean Glenn Hubbard. "She is a terrific role model for our students, the broader business community, and women worldwide."

Krumsiek currently serves as co-chair of the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative, a partnership between the United Nations Environment Programme and 200 financial institutions around the globe mandated to develop and promote the links between sustainability and financial performance. Under her leadership at Calvert, the Calvert Women’s Principles were created in 2004, marking the first global code of corporate conduct focusing exclusively on empowering, advancing, and investing in women worldwide. Krumsiek also serves on several private and nonprofit boards.

The Botwinick Prize in Business Ethics was established with a generous endowment from Columbia Business School alumnus Benjamin Botwinick BS ’26, and his wife, Bessie. Previous recipients of the Botwinick Prize include: Mikael Ohlsson, president and CEO for the IKEA Group; Peter Blom, CEO of Triodos Bank; Craig R. Barrett, retired CEO and chair of Intel Corporation; Jeffrey Immelt, CEO and chair of General Electric; Patrick Cescau, group chief executive of Unilever; James Sinegal, president and CEO of Costco Wholesale Corporation; and Joan Bavaria, founding president and CEO of Trillium Asset Management.
