With the help of 526 class committee volunteers, Reunion 2013 drew a record crowd: 2,400 alumni and guests for the three-day weekend, April 19–21. Alumni came to New York from 44 countries for the event, including groups from Spain, Argentina, and the United Kingdom. Thirty-four states were represented, with the largest contingents from the New York tri-state area, California, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. Nearly 40 percent of the class of 2012 returned for their first-year reunion and nearly 35 percent of the class of 2008 came back for their fifth. For their 25th-year reunion, the class of 1988 rallied over 150 alumni and guests to attend a class dinner on Saturday night.This year’s activities featured social events all around the city, including Friday’s welcome reception at Cipriani 42nd Street and Saturday’s class dinners at different venues at Chelsea Piers as well as at the Italian restaurant, Del Posto. Sunday brunch was held at Guastavino’s, overlooking the East River.A number of academic offerings were also new to the program in 2013. Alumni attended a session on entrepreneurship featuring the founders of the new Columbia Business Lab in Soho. There was a new CaseWorks class dedicated to the launch of Betterment, an online investment company founded by Jon Stein ’09, who made a surprise appearance at the session. Joe Ienuso ’01 (EMBA), the executive vice president of facilities at Columbia University, gave a lively presentation on the current state of the Manhattanville project.Alumni from all the attending classes also took part in Saturday’s panel discussions, which covered subjects like the future of the banking industry, innovation in healthcare and energy, and the business of sports.Next year’s reunion—for the classes of 1964, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2013—will be held April 11–13, 2014.
