Three Columbia Business School faculty members have received inaugural 2010 Dean’s awards for teaching in an elective. All three teach in both the MBA and Executive MBA programs and incorporate insights from their research into their teaching, creating a tangible connection for students between theory and practice. Mark Broadie, the Carson Family Professor of Business in the Decision, Risk, and Operations Division, was recognized for teaching Security Pricing: Models and Computation and Options Markets and is the curriculum director of the Program for Financial Studies. His research is in risk management, security pricing, and computational finance. Ray Horton, the Frank R. Lautenberg Professor of Ethics and Corporate Governance in the Management Division, received the honor for his teaching of Modern Political Economy. Horton is also the faculty director of the Programs in Social Enterprise in Executive Education and a Bernstein Center Faculty Leader. His research addresses municipal finance and management. Oded Netzer, the Philip H. Geier Jr. Associate Professor in the Marketing Division, was recognized for his teaching of Marketing Research. Netzer’s research concerns customer-choice modeling, relationship modeling, and understanding consumers’ preferences. “These three professors were chosen because they are exceptionally great teachers and uniquely dedicated to their students,” said Professor Amir Ziv, vice dean and faculty director of the Arthur J. Samberg Institute for Teaching Excellence. “They produce courses that offer innovative content and use deep theory with practical implications, a driving goal for the School in reaching students.” In selecting faculty recipients, Dean Glenn Hubbard and the School’s vice deans considered student evaluations and course materials. The honor is one of several teaching awards given out each year by the School.
