Richard Zannino, former CEO of Dow Jones & Company, has been appointed Columbia Business School’s newest executive in residence.Zannino has served as executive vice president of Liz Claiborne, responsible for finance and administration, as well as the company’s retail, fragrance and licensing divisions. He has also held executive positions at General Signal Corp., Saks Holdings, Pieter Kiewit and Sons, Emery Worldwide and Continental Group, and in addition, is an active member of the Columbia Business School Media Forum.In his role as executive in residence, which he will occupy for a one-year renewable term, Zannino will have the opportunity to give guest lectures, work with campus clubs and conduct brown-bag luncheons for students with common interests. Most important, he will be available for one-on-one counseling sessions to advise students on career planning and strategy, among other topics relating to professional development.“They use a great deal of honesty,” said Donald C. Waite III ’66, director of the Executive in Residence Program. “Their support benefits students who are exploring potential professions and industries.” The Executive in Residence Program, established in 1971, incorporates retired and semiretired business leaders into the MBA programs to serve as mentors. The number of participating executives has doubled in the past five years.The program was founded by Robert W. Lear, who served in the program for more than 20 years, proposing that “every successful businessperson should put back into the jar as much as they took out.”
