Stephan Meier, assistant professor in the Management Division, and Daniel Paravisini, associate professor in the Finance and Economics Division, are the recipients of the 2010 Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching a Core Course.The recipients of the annual award are chosen by the Dean’s Office, which is guided by course evaluations submitted by students.“Both are exceptional facilitators of case discussions, which play an important role in the courses they teach,” said Vice Dean Amir Ziv. “In addition, they use insights from their research to illuminate course content.”Meier teaches Strategy Formulation and focuses his research on behavioral strategy. He received a PhD in economics from the University of Zurich and was previously a senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. Students praised Meier’s “ability to bring out the best contribution” from each member of the class and called him “a phenomenal discussion leader who guided the class through complicated business issues.”Paravisini teaches Corporate Finance and through his research addresses issues in corporate finance and financial institutions. He received a PhD in economics from MIT and an MBA from the Instituto de Estudios Administrationin in Caracas, Venezuela. Students wrote that Paravisini is “genuinely dedicated to ensuring that his students not only understand the material, but also how it relates to the real world” and praised him for making “a complicated subject digestible and fun.”The School is committed to promoting and fostering excellence in teaching through such initiatives as teacher mentoring opportunities and workshops. To identify and reward ingenuity, commitment, and teaching practices, several distinguished faculty members are awarded teaching prizes each year.
