Gary Appel ’77, who recently retired as vice chairman of the global middle market private equity funds manager, Castle Harlan, Inc., has been named Executive in Residence at Columbia Business School.
Appel has over 35 years of experience in the financial services industry. Prior to joining Castle Harlan, he was vice chairman of Glencoe Capital, Ltd., a Chicago-based middle market private equity funds manager, and a member of its Investment Committee. While at Glencoe, he co-founded and managed one of the first independent co-investment funds created for a state retirement system.In the late 1990s, Appel was a senior managing director at Bear Stearns, Inc. Before that, he was with Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, Inc., for 17 years, serving as a managing director and a founding partner of DLJ Merchant Banking. He also was a member of DLJ Merchant Banking’s Board of Directors and its Investment Committee. Appel has served on the boards of directors of numerous corporations, across a variety of industries, and on the boards of several not-for-profit institutions.
Among the first of its kind when it was founded nearly three decades ago, the Executives in Residence Program integrates senior executives into the life of the School. Current executives in residence include experts in media, investment banking, private equity, and management, from such companies as Goldman Sachs and McKinsey. These leaders also teach classes, participate in student-run conferences, and organize informal activities for students with common interests.
