Katherine Phillips, the Paul Calello Professor of Leadership and Ethics, has been appointed senior vice dean of Columbia Business School, effective July 1, 2014.
Phillips succeeds Gita Johar, the Meyer Feldberg Professor of Business, whose three-year term as senior vice dean ends on June 30. Phillips joined the Columbia Business School faculty in 2011 and quickly assumed leadership roles working with faculty members and students on many different curricular and cultural issues. Before joining the School, she was associate professor of management and organizations at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and co-director and founder of Northwestern’s Center on the Science of Diversity.
Phillips’s research addresses the value of diversity and the barriers that prevent society, organizations, and especially work teams from capturing the knowledge, perspectives, and unique backgrounds of every one of its members. In addition to its scholarly contributions, Phillips’s work has direct relevance to the Columbia Business School community and the School’s corporate partners. Her recent work tackles issues surrounding the intersection of race and gender stereotypes, the relationship between diversity and morality, and insights on how homogeneity affects group processes just as much as diversity itself.
Phillips has received numerous professional awards for her research accomplishments, including recognition from the International Association of Conflict Management; the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management; the Rosabeth Moss Kanter Excellence in Work-Family Research Award; and the Gender, Diversity, and Organizations Division of the Academy of Management.
“Since joining the School, Kathy has become an invaluable member of our faculty,” said Dean Glenn Hubbard. “Her efforts as curriculum developer, case writer, and core-course coordinator for the very successful LEAD course have already had a tremendous impact at the School and on our student and faculty culture. She excels in the classroom, earning the respect and admiration of students and colleagues alike. Kathy has also made significant contributions to the Business School and to Columbia University at large through her service on the School’s Core Committee, as coordinator of the Behavioral Research Lab, and on the Provost’s Diversity Committee, as well as by acting as an advisor to several student groups. I look forward to working closely with Kathy in her new role.”
Phillips received her BS in psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her PhD in organizational behavior from Stanford University.
