The 2016 Real Estate Alumni Reception was held on Thursday, May 5, 2016 at the Columbia Club of New York, and was a celebration of Professor Lynne B. Sagalyn, as we honored her, and thanked her for her vision, dedication, and leadership. This annual reception is hosted by the Paul Milstein Center for Real Estate and Real Estate Circle and sponsored by Goodwin Procter LLP. 

Professor Stephen Penman of Columbia Business School offers tips for the beginner investor.   Understand your investment horizon. When do you want to cash out? Establish your time horizon to determine your risk profile. A house is an excellent asset to own, but be wary of buying at “bubble” prices.  Owning a home is one of the few ways an individual can issue long-term debt (via a mortgage). Buy when interest rates are low.

New parents are usually asked two questions: “is it a boy or a girl?” and “what name did you choose?” Your name is usually the first thing someone hears about you. Now, new research from Columbia Business School reveals that your name says even more about you than you might have believed. 

The weekend featured numerous educational panels and discussions, a keynote address with Dean Glenn Hubbard and professors Bruce Greenwald and Joseph Stiglitz, and evening receptions and dinners.

The Paul Milstein Center for Real Estate is pleased to announce that Laura Burkey ’16, Cheryl Kong ‘16, and Erin Williams ’16 have all been awarded scholarships by the organization WX, New York Women Executives in Real Estate. As part of their scholarship package, they will the opportunity to participate in WX monthly breakfasts, annual dinner, and its prestigious mentoring program. All three women are focusing their MBA studies on real estate and also serve on the executive board of the school’s Real Estate Association.

On April 14th, 2016, during the conference with Governor Kuroda on Japan's fight against deflation, Professor Takatoshi Ito commented on policy moves for the BoJ in order to slow down the appreciation of the Japanese Yen, including expanding the already-record stimulus. His views highlighted the importance of the policy meeting on April 27th and 28th at BoJ. Professor Ito's comments can be found in Japanese and English below. The Chazen Institute of International Business has been renamed the Jerome A. Chazen Institute for Global Business, and Jerome Chazen has generously donated $10 million for its continued development, Dean Glenn Hubbard has announced.

On April 13, 2016, the Center on Japanese Economy and Business hosted a special lecture, featuring Governor Haruhiko Kuroda. Governor Kuroda spoke the Bank of Japan's decision for negative interest rates and Japan's unconventional monetary policy.
