The application for the academic year of 2020-2021 is now open. 

CJEB’s Chairman, Professor Hugh Patrick, contributed an article titled, “Local Businesses Revitalizing Regional Economies: Case of Oita,” to the Government of Japan’s official magazine, We Are Tomodachi. 

One of CJEB’s core faculty members, Professor Gerald L. Curtis, Burgess Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Columbia University, appeared on Bloomberg Daybreak: Asia and commented on incoming premiere Yoshihide Suga and the possibility of a snap election in Japan in the coming year. Professor Takatoshi Ito, director of CJEB’s Program on Public Pension and Sovereign Funds, professor at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University, was interviewed on NHK World. On August 5, 2020 the Center on Japanese Economy and Business (CJEB) organized a webinar titled, “Central Banking in the COVID-19 Era.” News outlets, including Bloomberg, Reuters, Asahi, NHK, and Nikkei, referenced the webinar and comments made by the speakers. 

Jackson G. Lu PhD '18, Mitsui Career Development Assistant Professor at Sloan School of Management of MIT, and a recipient of CJEB’s Doctoral Fellowship, was interviewed by Nikkei about his research on the under-representation of Asians in leadership positions.  

Takatoshi Ito, director of CJEB’s Program on Public Pension and Sovereign Funds, professor at the School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University, spoke on NPR’s Planet Money podcast in an episode titled, “Inflation, Deflation.” He can be heard midway through the podcast, starting at 11:32, when he joins to speak about deflation in Japan’s economy. A paper co-authored by Professor David Weinstein, CJEB’s director, was discussed in the Bloomberg article, Trade War Cut $1.7 Trillion From U.S. Market Caps: Study. 

CJEB’s Director, Professor David Weinstein, coauthored a paper titled, “The Effect of the U.S.-China Trade War on U.S. Investment.” The paper, which is published in CJEB’s Working Paper series, estimates the effect of U.S.-China tariff announcements on aggregate returns and the differential returns of firms exposed to China in order to identify their effect on treated and untreated firms. Spencer Cohen, CC ’19, who was awarded the Mitsubishi UFJ Trust Scholarship by CJEB’s nomination, wrote an article about his experience of the COVID-19 pandemic while studying in Japan and his decision to remain there to continue his studies. 緊急事態宣言、東大留学生たちの決断「それでも僕は東京に残る」(Newsweek Japan, 4/8/2020)

CJEB Research Associate, Professor Tsutomu Watanabe, Graduate School of Economics, University of Tokyo, wrote a Working Paper, “The Responses of Consumption and Prices in Japan to the COVID-19 Crisis and the Tohoku Earthquake.” The paper compares the responses of consumption and prices to the COVID-19 shock and another large-scale natural disaster that hit Japan, the Tohoku earthquake in March 2011. 

CJEB’s Visiting Fellow, Dr. Randall Jones, Non-resident Fellow, Korea Economic Institute of America; Former Senior Counselor - East Asia and Head of Japan/Korea Desk, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), was quoted in the Economist article “Startups offer a different future for South Korea’s economy” Startups offer a different future for South Korea’s economy (Economist, 4/8/2020) 

Nikkei recently published an article by Professor Takatoshi Ito, director of CJEB’s Program on Public Pension and Sovereign Funds, Professor at the School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University, in which he discusses COVID-19 and monetary policy.
