Revised Agenda and All Speakers Confirmed for "The Japanese Government as a Portfolio Manager: Managing the Nation's Wealth" on October 21st in Tokyo

The Center on Japanese Economy and Business and the Weatherhead East Asian Institute cosponsored a special lecture titled, "Japan's Politics: Current Realities, Future Possibilities" with Gerald L. Curtis, Burgess Professor of Political Science, Columbia University. Video of the Special Lecture is now available and a detailed summary report is forthcoming.

In the wake of Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda's resignation and the election of Taro Aso as his successor, Gerald Curtis, Burgess Professor of Political Science, Columbia University, gave a special lecture titled "Japan's Politics: Current Realities, Future Possibilities." The event was cosponsored by the Weatherhead East Asian Institute (WEAI) and the Center on Japanese Economy and Business (CJEB) of Columbia Business School on September 25. Approximately 180 people were in attendance.

CJEB held a symposium titled, "Perspectives on Japan's Political Economy - A Symposium with Columbia University Professors Curtis, Ogawa, Patrick, and Weinstein," on Wednesday, May 21 at Palace Hotel Tokyo.

The group was in Tokyo from June 2-6, 2008. The participant from Columbia Business School was Tim Baldenius, professor of accounting. Other participants in addition to Charles Wolf included Charla Griffy-Brown, professor of information systems, Pepperdine Graduate School of Business; Charles O'Reilly, professor of management, Stanford Graduate School of Business; and Richard Rumelt, professor of business and society, UCLA Anderson School of Management.

Alicia Ogawa presided over the upcoming Corporate Program Luncheon entitled, "Carlyle Japan: Looking Past Public Perception for Buyout Opportunities in Japan" at Japan Society on Thursday, May 15.

CJEB co-sponsors 2008 Chazen Study Tour to Japan. On March 4, 40 Columbia Business School students traveled to Japan for a ten day educational and cultural tour.

The Center on Japanese Economy and Business present the brown bag lecture: "An Update on US-Japan Relations."

In recent years American media have focused on the dramatic rise of China while largely ignoring the role of Japan in Asia. However, the relationship between these two Asian giants is much more complex than the occasional diplomatic flap that Americans read about in the newspapers.
