Former Skeptics Can Be Your Best Spokespeople

Social and behavioral scientists caution that you must be careful when you use the “convert communicator” tactic. If the converts bash their own group too much, they lose persuasive powers and credibility. They must hold on to some essence of their original group identity while revealing this specific decision is about not being able to align that identity with this particular candidate.

Research from Columbia Business School Shows that Consumers' Social Networks Offer Companies Increased Marketing Influence

Traditionally, companies look to a customer’s lifetime value (CLV) – a measure of how profitable their relationship with an individual will be over time – but new research from Columbia Business School indicates that traditional CLV measures can sharply underestimate the true value of the connected consumer. Today’s social networks can turn regular people – not necessarily big spenders – into major influencers.

New Research Helps Doctors Deliver Bad News to Patients

When doctors are forced to deliver negative and life-altering information to patients, they should deliver the news in a way that patients do not expect to hear it, this according to new research from Columbia Business School. Providing challenging information in a way that patients do not expect to hear it - or counter to a patient's "motivational focus" - will disrupt a patient's expected response, which in turn improves the patient’s ability to process critical information and make more informed and effective decisions regarding their treatment.

Research from Columbia Business School Reveals How to Shorten Emergency Room Wait Time

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, demand for emergency health care services is rapidly increasing, causing over-crowding and long wait-times in emergency rooms nationwide. New research from Columbia Business School shows that predictive analytics – that is, using data about ER demand to predict future demand – could help hospitals reduce wait times and improve care by diverting patients away from emergency rooms before they become overcrowded.

New Research Shows That Even in the For-Profit World, Employees Will Sacrifice Salary for Strong Corporate Social Responsibility

According to new research from Columbia Business School, workers of all ages increasingly value purpose and meaningfulness at work, so much so that they are willing to give up monetary benefits in exchange. "We tend to think of valuing non-monetary benefits over money only in mission-driven and public service organizations, but this research demonstrates that workers in for-profit organizations are also motivated by a company’s social responsibility," said author Vanessa Burbano, assistant professor of management at Columbia Business School.
