Columbia Business School’s Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Management Program will host the 13th Annual Healthcare Conference on February 24.

Linda Green, the Cain Brothers & Company Professor of Healthcare Management, has been appointed faculty director of the Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Management (HPM) Program, effective immediately.

When doctors are forced to deliver negative and life-altering information to patients, they should deliver the news in a way that patients do not expect to hear it, this according to new research from Columbia Business School. Providing challenging information in a way that patients do not expect to hear it - or counter to a patient's "motivational focus" - will disrupt a patient's expected response, which in turn improves the patient’s ability to process critical information and make more informed and effective decisions regarding their treatment.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, demand for emergency health care services is rapidly increasing, causing over-crowding and long wait-times in emergency rooms nationwide. New research from Columbia Business School shows that predictive analytics – that is, using data about ER demand to predict future demand – could help hospitals reduce wait times and improve care by diverting patients away from emergency rooms before they become overcrowded.

Dean Glenn Hubbard has announced the appointment of Beatrice Ellerin, known as Bunny, as Director of the Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Management (HPM) Program, effective September 1. Cliff Cramer, who created the HPM Program in 2006, will continue to support the program as an adjunct professor and mentor to students and alumni.

Lorraine Marchand ’06 has been appointed director of the Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Management Program. In her new role, which she assumed on August 3, Marchand is responsible for strategic, curricular, and administrative initiatives for the program, working closely with students, faculty and staff members, alumni, and corporate sponsors. Marchand replaced Cliff Cramer, who had led the program since its inception in 2006. 

Older adults have very different money priorities than younger members of their families. Rather than focusing on accruing wealth, older adults should strive to spend less and to plan their estate. A large concern when it comes to these activities is cognitive decline. Eric Johnson, Columbia Business School, says that while cognitive challenges are present in older age, years of collected wisdom can counteract this decline.
